What works today

Opinions, summaries and the citation graph are live over REST and MCP. The statute reference table is not yet populated, and downloads are waiting on rights confirmation. The web channel means LAW.co's own public case pages.

Opinions, statutes and regulations

Legal research draws on three kinds of primary source. The marketplace offers the first today and says plainly that it does not offer the other two.

What LAW.co holds — and what it doesn't

  • Federal and state court opinions with case metadata (court, date, docket, reporter citations, judges, parties)
  • LAW.co-generated case summaries, holdings, key issues and topics (published subset only)
  • Case-to-case citation graph
  • A small curated table of state estate-planning statute reference values
  • An internal state bill monitor for estate-planning topics (third-party LegiScan data)
  • Not held: A statute corpus (codes or session laws)
  • Not held: Federal or state regulations
  • Not held: A complete legislative feed

LAW.co is affiliated with Data.co. A written intercompany agreement covering redistribution, pricing and settlement is pending, so paid access and bulk downloads are not yet offered.

Public domain versus licensed content

Judges' opinions are public domain under the government-edicts doctrine, and case facts such as names, dates and citation strings are not copyrightable. Those records carry a public-domain license id and isDerived: false.

LAW.co's summaries, holdings, topics and citation graph are its own work, licensed rather than public, and priced as premium. Possible publisher headnotes in legacy head matter and CourtListener's CC BY-ND annotated HTML are excluded entirely. Even for public-domain text, bulk download stays off until LAW.co and counsel confirm the position, because LAW.co claims its compilation and arrangement.

How to cite marketplace records

Cite an opinion the way you would from any source: case name, reporter citation, court and year, with the canonical URL when the record has one. Where you display records, credit LAW.co as the provider and the upstream source named in provenance.

Do not cite an AI summary, holding or topic as the court's words; they are machine-generated and labeled as not authority. Opinion text is not official or certified, so verify quotations against the court's own record before filing or publishing.

Questions

Legal data FAQ

Why is LAW.co the only legal provider?

It was the first provider to complete our integration review. Other legal providers are welcome to apply; each goes through the same licensing, provenance and quality review.

Are record counts available?

Not yet. LAW.co's documentation reports a corpus size, but Data.co has not verified it, so every listing shows “Not yet verified”.

What are the demo records?

Synthetic placeholders titled [DEMO] with DEMO-#### citations. The previews on this site use them; the API returns live LAW.co records. They have no legal meaning and are never billed.

Can I resolve a citation to a case?

Not yet. LAW.co has no citation-resolution endpoint, so the resolve endpoint and the get_citation tool return unsupported_operation instead of guessing.
