You set the price. We meter and settle.
Providers choose how each dataset is priced. Data.co handles discovery, delivery, metering and billing, and settles with providers from metered usage under a written agreement.
How a dataset can be priced
| Tier | What it means for buyers |
|---|---|
| Free | Available on every plan, including Free. |
| Standard | Available on every marketplace plan, within that plan's quotas. |
| Premium | Available on Pro ($149/month) and Business ($799/month) plans, typically for value-added layers. |
| Enterprise | Only through an enterprise agreement. |
| Contact | Not self-serve; terms agreed case by case. |
How tiers meet buyer plans
Buyers subscribe to a marketplace plan that sets their monthly quotas for API requests, MCP calls and downloads, and which dataset tiers they are entitled to. A request for a dataset outside the buyer's tiers is refused with not_entitled before your systems are called, so you are never asked to serve a request that cannot be billed.
Plan revenue and per-request charges are separate questions. Per-request customer prices are configured per tier and are zero by default until pricing is agreed with providers; your supplier cost per request is then calculated from the charge and your agreed revenue share.
How money flows
- 1
Meter
Every billable API call, MCP tool call and download is recorded as one usage event, keyed by a unique request id so retries cannot double-count.
- 2
Snapshot terms
Each usage event records the license terms in force when the data was served, so later changes to your terms do not rewrite history.
- 3
Reconcile
Usage events can be reconciled against your own request logs using the shared request id Data.co sends with each call.
- 4
Settle
Revenue share or per-request supplier cost is calculated per your agreement.
- 5
Report
You see usage by dataset and access method.
Metering rules
| Activity | Metered |
|---|---|
| Record search, record fetch, downloads | Yes — one event per successful request |
| Citation resolution | Yes, when served |
| Catalog, schema and provider reads | No |
| Failed or refused requests | No |
| Demo or synthetic records | Recorded at zero cost and waived — never billed |
Set per provider, in writing
We do not publish a standard revenue-share percentage. The split depends on who hosts the data, who bears delivery cost, and whether Data.co adds enrichment. It is set in each provider agreement.
Demo or synthetic records are never billed, and usage is not settled until the provider agreement is signed — which is why LAW.co datasets are not yet sold.
Pricing patterns that fit common datasets
Public source, paid enrichment
Offer public-domain text and facts at the standard tier and your editorial or AI layer at premium. Buyers can start with the source and pay for the layer that took you work to build.
Reference data on contact
Small, curated tables that need context to use well are often better as contact-tier listings, with terms agreed per buyer.
Enterprise-only bulk
Keep request-time access self-serve and reserve bulk delivery, private connections and hosted copies for enterprise agreements with explicit use terms.
Free samples
A free-tier sample dataset lets buyers test fitness before they buy, without exposing the full corpus.
Where marketplace billing stands
Buyer plans are priced at $149/month for Pro and $799/month for Business, with Free and Enterprise on either side. Metering, license snapshots and supplier-cost calculation are built. Settlement with providers begins only under a signed provider agreement, and no provider is being settled today.
Questions buyers ask
Can I offer some records free and charge for others?
Yes. Pricing is set per dataset, so a public-domain source layer and a proprietary enrichment layer can be priced differently, as LAW.co's catalog does.
When are providers paid?
On the schedule in your agreement, from reconciled usage.
Can I change a dataset's tier later?
Yes, by agreement. Buyers see the change in the catalog, and past usage keeps the terms that applied when it was served.
Do I see who my buyers are?
You see usage by dataset and channel. What you see about individual buyers is set in your agreement and in buyers' terms.
Can I offer bulk licenses?
Yes, as an enterprise or contact-tier arrangement. Bulk delivery stays rights-gated and is only enabled once your redistribution terms are confirmed.
Can I see usage before an agreement is signed?
Demo usage during onboarding is recorded at zero cost and is visible for testing, but nothing is settled until a written agreement is in place.
Do buyers pay you directly?
No. Buyers pay Data.co for plans and usage, and Data.co settles with providers under each provider agreement.
