How LAW.co builds its corpus
LAW.co bulk-loaded the Caselaw Access Project corpus and ingests newer opinions daily from CourtListener. A copyright gate accepts only plain-text or Harvard XML opinion bodies from allowlisted public-domain sources; CourtListener's CC BY-ND annotated HTML is never ingested.
On top of the opinions, LAW.co generates summaries, holdings, key issues and topics with a language model, checks them with a second-model faithfulness judge, and publishes only those that pass its QA gate. Its citation graph links cases using CAP's citation data and citation extraction on newer opinions.
What is still pending
- 1
Statute reference data
LAW.co's production estate-planning statute table is not yet populated, so that dataset's REST and MCP channels stay closed until it is.
- 2
Intercompany agreement
A written license covering redistribution of opinion text and facts, the AI enrichment layer and the citation graph, plus pricing and settlement.
- 3
Counsel sign-off
Confirmation of the public-domain position for opinion text, which gates any bulk download.
- 4
Internal endpoints
Proposed LAW.co endpoints for paginated search, citation resolution and dataset statistics. Without them, search is sampled and citations cannot be resolved.
Crediting LAW.co
Where you display LAW.co records, credit LAW.co as the provider and the upstream source named in each record's provenance (CAP or CourtListener). AI summaries must be shown as machine-generated and must not be cited as authority.
LAW.co's terms prohibit bulk extraction and using its corpus to train or evaluate models without a separate written agreement. Data.co enforces that by keeping downloads closed and serving records one request at a time.
About LAW.co data
How many cases does LAW.co hold?
LAW.co's documentation reports a corpus size, but Data.co has not verified it, so we do not publish it.
Can I use LAW.co today without Data.co?
Yes. Individual cases are readable on LAW.co's public case pages, which is why the web channel shows as available.
Does LAW.co offer statutes or regulations?
No. It holds a small estate-planning statute reference table, not a statute corpus, and no regulations.
