Downloads, only where the license allows.
Bulk exports in Parquet, CSV or JSONL are offered per dataset, and only when both the license and the provider allow redistribution. Today no dataset can be downloaded.
Two checks before any export
- 1
License
The dataset's redistribution status must be public or paid. Restricted or unknown means no download, whatever else is true.
- 2
Provider confirmation
The download channel itself must be available. “Awaiting rights confirmation” blocks export until the provider signs off — even for public-domain material, because the provider may claim the compilation.
- 3
Credentials
If the provider has not issued a service credential, the channel is not configured and nothing is exported.
Can I download it?
| Dataset | Redistribution | Download status | Formats | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| U.S. Court Opinions (LAW.co corpus) | Public — redistributable (single records) | Awaiting rights confirmation | jsonl | Opinion text is public domain, but LAW.co ToS prohibits bulk extraction, CAP head_matter may contain publisher headnotes, and no bulk endpoint exists. Owner must approve. |
| LAW.co AI Case Summaries | Paid — provider-owned, licensed access only | Awaiting rights confirmation | jsonl | LAW.co proprietary derived layer; ToS forbids bulk extraction absent a written agreement. |
| LAW.co Case Citation Graph | Paid — provider-owned, licensed access only | Awaiting rights confirmation | csv, jsonl | Citation strings are facts, but the compiled graph is claimed by LAW.co (ToS §11). |
| State Estate-Planning Statute Reference Values | Unknown — awaiting provider confirmation | Awaiting rights confirmation | csv | CSV export. |
| State Estate-Law Bill Monitor | Restricted — not redistributed | Not offered | — | Not offered. |
Why public-domain opinions still aren't downloadable
Court-authored opinion text is public domain. But LAW.co's terms prohibit bulk extraction of its corpus without a written agreement and claim its compilation and arrangement; reporter headnotes in some legacy records may carry third-party rights; and LAW.co has no bulk-export endpoint.
The intercompany agreement between LAW.co and Data.co is pending, along with counsel sign-off on the public-domain posture. Until both are done, downloads stay off — and the listing says so.
How an export request works
- 1
Request
Send
POST /datasets/{id}/downloadswith the format you want. Your key needs the datasets:query scope. - 2
Rights check
The license and the download channel's status are checked first. A restricted or unknown license, or a channel awaiting rights confirmation, returns 403 rights_restricted.
- 3
Grant
If the export is allowed, the response carries a single-use grant token for that file. It cannot be reused or shared to download again.
- 4
Metering
The download counts against your plan's monthly download allowance and appears in your usage, tagged by dataset.
curl -X POST https://api.data.co/v1/datasets/<slug>/downloads \
-H "Authorization: Bearer $DATACO_API_KEY" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{ "format": "parquet" }'{
"data": null,
"meta": { "request_id": "req_…", "api_version": "v1", "demo": false },
"error": {
"type": "rights_error",
"code": "rights_restricted",
"message": "…'download' access is awaiting rights confirmation from the provider.",
"param": null,
"request_id": "req_…"
}
}Which format to ask for
| Format | Best for | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Parquet | Analytics engines, data warehouses and dataframes. | Columnar and compressed; keeps types. Nested fields such as provenance stay structured. |
| CSV | Spreadsheets and simple loaders. | Flat; nested fields are serialized, and long opinion text makes rows large. |
| JSONL | Pipelines and document stores. | One record per line in the same shape as the API, including provenance and any enrichment block. |
Each dataset lists the formats its provider supports; not every dataset will offer all three.
What you may do with downloaded data
A download is governed by the dataset's license, not by the fact that you have a copy. Public-domain source text stays public domain; a provider's own layer, such as summaries or a citation graph, stays licensed to you on the terms in the listing and your agreement.
Model training is a separate question. Where a provider's terms prohibit training or evaluation without a written agreement, as LAW.co's currently do, a permitted download does not change that.
Downloads FAQ
Can I page through the API to build my own copy?
Systematic extraction of a dataset through the API is not a substitute for a licensed download and may breach the provider's terms. LAW.co's terms prohibit bulk extraction without a written agreement.
Do downloads include AI enrichment?
Only if your plan is entitled to the dataset's tier and the provider allows the layer to be exported. Derived blocks keep their isDerived flag.
Is there a size limit on exports?
Downloads count against your plan's monthly download allowance. Very large or recurring exports are better handled under an Enterprise agreement or a private connection.
Will LAW.co data ever be downloadable?
That depends on the pending intercompany agreement and counsel sign-off. If both allow it, the listing's download status will change.
