One category per dataset, assigned by the catalog
Each dataset on the marketplace belongs to exactly one category, taken from the provider's catalog entry rather than from keywords or tags. The counts on the cards above are computed from that catalog every time the page is built, so a category reads "No datasets yet" until a provider has actually listed something in it. Today 1 category has data and 6 are empty.
The empty categories are not placeholders for data we hold privately. They describe the industries the marketplace is designed to support, and each one has its own page that explains what a useful listing would contain. With one provider live, the industry filter on the dataset search maps one-to-one to these categories.
From category to a dataset you can use
- 1
Open the category
Each category page lists its datasets and repeats the provider, coverage and access badges you see in search, so you can compare listings side by side.
- 2
Narrow with filters
Jump to all datasets to combine the category with jurisdiction, license, update frequency or format.
- 3
Read the listing
A dataset page shows its schema fields, sources, coverage notes, quality notes and the status of every access channel, including channels that are not offered.
- 4
Check the license first
Redistribution status (public, paid, restricted or unknown) decides what you may do with records, independent of which plan you are on.

The same rules apply in every category
Whatever the industry, datasets are designed to be reached the same three ways: the REST API at https://api.data.co/v1, the MCP server at https://api.data.co/mcp for AI agents, and rights-gated downloads. One scoped key covers REST and MCP.
Today 3 listings have REST access open and 0 listings are downloadable; LAW.co's statute reference table is not yet populated and its downloads await rights confirmation. Record previews on this site are labeled demo fixtures; the API returns live records.
Plans work across categories: Free ($0) includes free and standard dataset tiers, Pro ($149/mo) and Business ($799/mo) add the premium tier, and Enterprise is quoted for contract-only datasets.
Category questions
Why does only one category have datasets?
LAW.co is the only provider on the marketplace so far, and everything it holds is legal data. Other categories fill in as providers pass review for licensing, provenance and quality.
Can a dataset appear in more than one category?
No. Each listing has a single category from its catalog entry. Use keyword search or the data-type filter to find related material that sits elsewhere.
Can I request a dataset for an empty category?
Yes. Tell the marketplace team what you need through the contact page. Requests help us decide which providers to approach, but they are not a commitment that data will be listed.
How do I list data in a category?
Apply as a provider. You will be asked to show you hold the rights to what you list, describe its sources and coverage, and set your own terms and pricing tier.
Will new categories be added?
The seven categories cover the industries the marketplace is designed to support. If a provider's data does not fit any of them, we would rather add a category than file it in the wrong one.
Do categories affect price or access?
No. Price follows the dataset's pricing tier and your plan, and access follows each channel's status. A category is only a way to group listings for browsing.
Have data in one of these categories?
We review providers for licensing, provenance and quality. You keep control of terms and pricing; we handle discovery, delivery and metering.
