Frequently asked questions
Straight answers, including about what is not available yet.
What data is on the marketplace today?
Five legal datasets from one provider, LAW.co: U.S. court opinions, LAW.co AI case summaries, a case citation graph, a small table of state estate-planning statute reference values, and a state bill monitor that is restricted and not available through Data.co.
Do you offer statutes or regulations?
No. Full statute corpora and regulations are not currently offered. LAW.co does not hold them. The only statute-related data is the small estate-planning reference table, which is contact-only.
How many records are there?
We do not publish record counts until we have verified them with the provider. Every LAW.co listing currently shows its count as “Not yet verified”.
What are the [DEMO] records?
Synthetic placeholder records used for the previews on this site. The API returns live records; [DEMO] records are not real cases, statutes or bills, have no legal meaning and are never billed.
Is any of this legal advice?
No. Opinion text is not official or certified, and AI summaries are machine-generated and must not be cited as authority.
Can I use the API or MCP server today?
Yes. Sign up at app.data.co, create an organization API key, and call api.data.co/v1 or the MCP server at api.data.co/mcp. LAW.co court opinions, case summaries and the citation graph are live; the statute reference table is not yet populated.
Can I download datasets in bulk?
Not today. Downloads are rights-gated: the license must allow redistribution and the provider must confirm. Every LAW.co download channel is awaiting rights confirmation.
How does authentication work?
Organization API keys with explicit scopes (for example datasets:read, legal:read, mcp:invoke). The same key works for REST and MCP.
What is MCP?
The Model Context Protocol is an open standard for connecting AI applications to tools and data. The Data.co MCP server exposes marketplace datasets as tools an agent can call, with the same keys and permissions as the REST API.
Why does search return different results each time?
LAW.co's current search endpoint samples up to 50 matches at random. Responses carry a warning saying so until LAW.co ships a paginated search endpoint.
Is there an SDK?
Not yet; SDKs are planned. The API is plain JSON over HTTPS, and we document raw HTTP and function-calling examples.
Who owns the data?
The provider. Public-domain material like court-authored opinion text stays public domain; LAW.co's summaries and citation graph are LAW.co's proprietary work. Each dataset page states its license and redistribution status.
How much does it cost?
There is a Free plan; Pro is $149/month and Business is $799/month (billed monthly in USD); Enterprise is quoted. Some datasets carry premium provider pricing on top, also not yet published.
Can I train models on marketplace data?
Only where the dataset's license allows. LAW.co's terms currently prohibit training on its corpus without a written agreement.
Is LAW.co independent of Data.co?
No. LAW.co is affiliated with Data.co. A written intercompany agreement covering redistribution and pricing is pending, and LAW.co data is not sold until it is signed.
What is provenance and why does every record have it?
Provenance records where a record came from: the provider, the upstream source, the canonical URL, the license, when it was retrieved and whether it is derived. It lets you cite correctly and lets an agent tell source text from generated text.
What does isDerived mean?
false means original source text or facts, such as a court's opinion. true means an AI or editorial layer, such as a LAW.co summary, which travels in a separate enrichment block with its own provenance.
How do I cite a court opinion from the marketplace?
Cite the case name, reporter citation, court and year, link the canonical URL when present, and credit LAW.co and the upstream source where you display records. Never cite an AI summary as the court's words.
Why are some access methods shown as unavailable?
Each channel — web, REST, MCP, download — has its own status. A channel can be available, not yet connected, waiting on rights confirmation, or not offered at all, and the listing gives the reason.
Are prices shown with tax?
No. Plans are billed monthly in USD before tax; sales tax or VAT may be added depending on your billing location.
Can I change or cancel my plan?
Yes, from the billing portal in the app. Upgrades and downgrades are prorated, and cancellation takes effect at the end of the period you have paid for.
Can we pay by invoice?
Enterprise agreements can be invoiced. Self-serve Pro and Business plans are paid by card.
How do I become a provider?
Apply on the provider page. We review licensing, provenance and quality, then list your datasets with honest access statuses.
Do I have to hand over a copy of my data?
No. Data.co can call your API at request time and store only references and usage events.
What revenue share do providers get?
It is set per provider agreement, depending on hosting, delivery cost and any enrichment. We do not publish a standard percentage.
