What is the AI chatbot market share in 2026?

ChatGPT holds between 46.4% and 80.5% of the AI chatbot market, depending on which tracker you use. Figure 1 lines up five of them. Statcounter, which counts clicks from chatbots to other websites, gives ChatGPT 80.5% in September 2026. Semrush website visits give it 64.8% in June. Similarweb's web-traffic panel gives it 55.5% in August. Comscore's panel puts its share of prompts at 50% in June, and Sensor Tower's count of unique app and web users puts it at 46.4% at the end of May.

Every tracker ranks ChatGPT first and Gemini second, with Gemini at 10.9% to 30%. Claude's share ranges most widely, from under 1% of referral clicks to 11.8% of website visits.

Why do AI chatbot market share figures differ?

AI chatbot market share figures differ because each tracker counts a different thing. Referral data only sees a chatbot when a user clicks a link out to a website, which favors ChatGPT and penalizes assistants used for writing or coding. Statcounter also cannot count Grok, which does not pass referral data. Website-visit panels miss mobile apps. Prompt and audience panels cover apps and the web but rely on sampled users.

Periods differ too. The five figures in Figure 1 run from May to September 2026. Statcounter's first October 2026 reading shows ChatGPT near half of referrals, a drop of almost 30 points in one month. Statcounter keeps each day's data open to revision for 45 days after publication, so this graphic uses September. Its 80.5% matches the figure Exploding Topics reported from Statcounter's data on October 7.

Is ChatGPT losing market share?

Yes. ChatGPT is losing share on every tracker, even though its own usage is still growing. Comscore found its share of AI prompt volume fell from 70% in January 2026 to 50% in June, while Gemini rose from 17% to 30% and Claude from 2% to 11%. Similarweb's August 2026 update put ChatGPT at 55.5% of generative AI website traffic, down from 73.3% twelve months earlier. Even on Statcounter's referral measure, its share slipped from 84.21% in April 2025 to 80.47% in September 2026.

Sensor Tower reports that ChatGPT's share of unique users fell below 50% for the first time in March 2026. In the U.S., Claude's share on the same measure rose from 4.4% to nearly 14% in the year to May 2026, after a wave of ChatGPT uninstalls following OpenAI's agreement with the Department of War.

How many people use ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude?

About 44% of U.S. adults say they use ChatGPT, according to a Pew Research Center survey from February 2026, up from 18% in 2023. Gemini is second at 24%, followed by Copilot (17%), Meta AI (14%), Grok (8%) and Claude (6%). Use is highest among younger adults: 61% of 18- to 29-year-olds use ChatGPT.

Company counts are larger but not comparable with each other. Google says the Gemini app passed 1 billion monthly active users in August 2026, up from 400 million at I/O in May 2025. Sensor Tower says ChatGPT became the fastest mobile app ever to reach 1 billion monthly active users, in May 2026. Sensor Tower's combined app and web estimates put ChatGPT at over 1.1 billion monthly users, Gemini at 662 million and Claude at 245 million.

What is the LLM market share for businesses?

Anthropic leads OpenAI with businesses. In September 2026, 43.8% of U.S. businesses on Ramp's platform paid Anthropic for subscriptions or tokens, compared with 40.6% for OpenAI. Anthropic's share was 8.4% two years earlier and passed OpenAI's in May 2026. Overall, 55.9% of businesses on Ramp paid for some AI product in September.

Menlo Ventures estimates that Anthropic earned 40% of enterprise LLM API spending in 2025, ahead of OpenAI at 27% and Google at 21%. In 2023, the split was OpenAI 50%, Anthropic 12% and Google 7%. Menlo attributes much of the shift to coding, where it estimates Anthropic's share at 54%.

Is AI search taking market share from Google?

Not yet in referral traffic. When Statcounter compares the two head to head, Google sent 99.61% of referral page views to websites in September 2026 and ChatGPT sent 0.39%. Google also held 89.94% of worldwide search engine market share that month. AI answers are growing inside Google itself: Google says AI Overviews has more than 2.5 billion monthly users and AI Mode more than 1 billion.

Methodology & caveats

Each strip in Figure 1 shows one tracker's published shares for ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude. "All others" is 100% minus those three, except for Statcounter and Semrush, where it is the sum of the other chatbots they list. Shares are as published, not rounded or adjusted. The five trackers use different methods and months (May–September 2026) and cover different regions: Statcounter, Semrush, Similarweb and Sensor Tower are worldwide, and Comscore's release does not state its panel's geography.

Two series are reported second-hand. Semrush's visit shares were calculated by Exploding Topics, a Semrush company, from Semrush Traffic Analytics data for nine chatbot websites (web only, no apps). Sensor Tower's share and user figures come from TechCrunch's report on Sensor Tower's State of AI 2026 report; Sensor Tower's own summary confirms the below-50% finding and Claude's U.S. share. Similarweb's figures come from its post on X, which lists shares by month without a full methodology.

Pew's 2026 question asked about several chatbots at once. From 2023 to 2025 it asked only about ChatGPT, of adults who had heard of it, so the trend is indicative. Ramp's index reflects businesses that use Ramp cards and bill pay, and its recent months can be revised as late transactions arrive. Menlo Ventures' shares are survey-based estimates of spending, and Menlo is an Anthropic investor. Statcounter can revise data for 45 days after first publication, which still covers the last days of September; its September 2026 figures were retrieved on November 7, 2026.
